LONDON — The Ontario government has completed renovations at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre in London, expanding capacity with an additional 110 beds for minimum- and medium-security adult inmates.
The project involved repurposing the Regional Intermittent Unit, which officially reopened on March 24. Alongside the expansion, the facility has created 45 new correctional officer positions for the London area, boosting local employment.
According to a government release, the expanded space will enhance mental health services, inmate programming, and staff training, improving overall operations within the detention centre.
This initiative is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to increase correctional capacity across the province. The government also plans to construct two new facilities in eastern Ontario — the Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex in Kemptville and the Brockville Correctional Complex — while also expanding the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre and the Quinte Detention Centre.
