Potholes Surge Across Ontario as Spring Freeze-Thaw Cycle Takes Its Toll

TORONTO — A harsh spring freeze-and-thaw cycle is wreaking havoc on Ontario’s roads, creating more potholes than usual and causing frustration for drivers.

Mike Sanders, owner of Aaron’s Taxi in Sudbury, says rough roads are becoming a daily challenge. “It’s just part of life now,” he said. “The major roads in Sudbury are especially bad this year.”

His fleet travels key city routes dozens of times a day, and potholes — especially those hidden near the curb — are unavoidable. “It’s been tough on our vehicles,” Sanders said. “Tires, rims, suspensions — everything takes a beating.”

He added that the situation is made worse by the lower quality of parts available. “We often use after-market parts to save money, but they just don’t hold up like they used to.”

City officials from across Ontario have reported a similar rise in potholes, attributing it to the repeated freezing and thawing of pavement — a common issue in early spring.
