TORONTO — Ontario’s auditor general Shelley Spence is preparing to release four special reports today, focusing on major provincial programs including child care, the Skills Development Fund, and environmental measures.
One of the key reports will analyze Ontario’s implementation of the federal government’s $10-a-day child-care program, where fees are capped at $22 per day. While the program has helped families, creating enough spaces to meet demand remains a major challenge. Ontario has also not yet signed an agreement with Ottawa to extend the program beyond March 31, 2026.
The auditor will also review the $2.5-billion Skills Development Fund, particularly the training stream that provides grants to organizations for hiring, training, and retraining workers.
Additionally, the reports will examine Ontario’s progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and evaluate the role of the Home Construction Regulatory Authority (HCRA), the body responsible for licensing and regulating new homebuilders and sellers.
These reports are expected to spark significant discussions about the province’s management of essential services and long-term commitments.
