NEPEAN, ONT. — Advanced Building Innovation Company Inc., a Nepean-based manufacturer of prefabricated homes, has been fined $60,000 after a workplace incident in July 2023 left a maintenance worker injured.
On July 31, 2023, the worker was conducting repairs on an automatic nailing machine used to assemble wall frames. The machine was not locked out at the time.
Unaware that maintenance was in progress, a co-worker started the machine, causing injuries to the worker.
A Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development investigation revealed the company had existing lock-out/tag-out and de-energizing procedures, along with a light curtain system designed to restrict access during operation. However, investigators determined the machine had not been properly locked out, and the light curtain system failed to prevent access.
The company pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court in Ottawa. On Aug. 28, Justice of the Peace Serge Legault imposed a $60,000 fine.
