Acting FMCSA Head Departs After Just Two Weeks

Washington, D.C. – Adrienne Camire has stepped down as acting and deputy administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) just two weeks after assuming the role.

No official reason has been provided for Camire’s sudden departure. Previously, she served as chief counsel for the Federal Highway Administration during President Donald Trump’s first term. FMCSA has not responded to requests for comment.

Camire was appointed to the position on March 7, but by March 19, her name was removed from the agency’s leadership page. Additionally, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has taken down the press release announcing her appointment, though a Jan. 31 release identifying her as an FMCSA senior advisor remains.

Current FMCSA Leadership

  • Sue Lawless – Acting Deputy Administrator, Executive Director, and Chief Safety Officer
  • Jesse Elison – Chief Counsel

Lawless initially took over as acting deputy administrator after the resignation of Robin Hutcheson in January 2024. Hutcheson had been the first Senate-confirmed FMCSA administrator in nearly three years, following her confirmation in September 2022.

FMCSA has faced leadership instability since Raymond Martinez stepped down in October 2019, with Jim Mullen, Wiley Deck, and Meera Joshi previously serving as acting administrators.
