A ‘Purrfect’ Future: Collingwood Breaks Ground on New Centre for Pets and People

Collingwood has officially welcomed a new era for animal care and community support. The Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) recently broke ground on the David & Helen Capin Regional Centre for Pets and People (RCPP), a state-of-the-art facility designed to strengthen the bond between humans and animals. With a vision of compassion and community, this $17.6 million initiative is set to transform pet care and social services in South Georgian Bay.

1. What Is the Regional Centre for Pets and People?

The RCPP is a 19,000+ square-foot facility that will provide shelter, medical care, and community programs for thousands of animals and families every year. It represents a milestone in addressing the growing demand for animal welfare and community outreach services.

2. Location and Communities Served

Situated at 135 Sandford Fleming Dr. in Collingwood, the new centre will serve:

  • Town of Collingwood
  • Clearview Township
  • Wasaga Beach
  • Municipality of Meaford
  • Grey Highlands Township
  • The Town of the Blue Mountains

3. Modern, Sustainable Design Features

Designed by Unity Design Studio and built by Bertram Construction, the RCPP focuses on sustainability, compassion, and functionality. Every aspect of the building reflects the bond between people and their pets.

4. Facilities Designed for Dogs

  • Pod-style housing, with no more than five dogs per pod.
  • Shared spaces for companionship and play.
  • Direct outdoor access from each kennel.

5. Facilities Designed for Cats

  • Spacious rooms housing 10–20 cats each.
  • Access to natural daylight in every room.
  • Enrichment areas designed for feline activity and stimulation.

6. A Healthcare-Grade Environment

The mechanical system of the RCPP will be equivalent to that of a healthcare facility, ensuring a safe, clean, and healthy environment for animals and staff alike.

7. Community Impact in Numbers

The centre is expected to:

  • Shelter 5,500+ animals annually.
  • Provide 6,700+ spay/neuter surgeries each year.
  • Support 2,200+ people in crisis.
  • Engage 6,000+ youth annually.
  • Welcome 30,000 visitors.
  • Support 600 volunteers and 50 staff.

8. Replacing the Old Facility

The RCPP will replace the current 6,000-square-foot building, originally designed in 2007 for just 500 animals per year. Today, GTHS serves nearly 4,000 animals annually, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.

9. Key Partners in the Project

  • Unity Design Studio: Architects behind the modern, compassionate design.
  • Bertram Construction: Builders with a strong record of supporting local charities.

10. Philanthropic Support and Fundraising Progress

  • $10.6 million raised toward the $17.6 million goal.
  • A major gift by Monika Merz and Michael T. Miller led to the naming of the Animal Hospital & Wellness Centre in their honor.

11. A Milestone for Collingwood and Beyond

This groundbreaking marks not just the start of construction but also the beginning of a new chapter for pets, families, and the community. The RCPP is a centre of healing, hope, and connection.

12. Conclusion – Building Hope for Pets and People

The David & Helen Capin Regional Centre for Pets and People is more than just a shelter; it is a promise to care for animals, support families, and create stronger communities. With its groundbreaking now complete, Collingwood is on its way to a more compassionate future.
